Dong Seon Kim (22,Hanwha Galleria Equstrian Team), who won consecutive gold medals in 2006 Doha, and 2010 Guangzhou Asian Games, earned the highest score ever recorded by a Korean at an International competition.

As member of Korean national team, he scored 65.022% and finished third-place in the International Grand Prix Special at the Wellington Classic Sunshine Challenge that was held from Jan. 25 to 29 in West Palm Beach, Florida.

Third place is the highest score ever earned by a Korean at an international competition. Kim surpassed the record of sixth place made by his Hanwha Galleria team coach Jung Kyun Suh at the 1988 CDI Aache.

Prior to this, Kim has also participated in the Gold Coast Dressage Association Open Festival that ran from Jan. 19 to 22, also in West Palm Beach, scoring 64.689 percent to come in fourth.

Kim’s earning of high score at an international competition among the strong nations of equestrian, Europe and the United States, means that Korean Equestrian has improved.

Korea is in qualifying Group G (Asia and Oceania) for the ticket to the London Olympics.

Korea has already missed out on the chance to go to the Summer Games in the team dressage. The two available spots from Group G (representing Asia and Oceania) and Group F (for Africa and the Middle East) have already been won by equestrian powerhouses Australia and New Zealand. Korea is currently competing against Japan and Malaysia to qualify for a ticket to the London Olympics in individual dressage.

As the standards for qualification became difficult compare to 2008 Beijing Olympics, if Kim qualifies for the individual dressage, it would mean that his performance has improved as close as European veterans and splendid achievement of Korean equestrian.

However Kim’s recent performances have raised hopes that he will progress in the individual category.

In order for Korea to qualify for the London Olympics, one has to compete in international competitions approved by International Federation for Equestrian Sports, and the total of top eight scores has to be higher than Japan and Malaysia’s, in Group G, scores. . Kim is staying in Florida until the end of February to prepare for the International Dressage Grand Prix and training hard to win a ticket to London.

“We are preparing hard to qualify for the London Olympics,” said Seo. “Dong Seon Kim’s hard work and heightened concentration in competitions shows increased potential and better results.”
